3D Printing

Jointly with the Georgia Institute of Technology, UL Chemical Safety Research has characterized the chemical and fine particle releases during the operation of desktop 3D printers, an important emerging technology. Key stakeholders were brought together in February of 2017 to review and discuss research results, consider third-party viewpoints, and develop a path forward in addressing this growing health hazard. At the recommendation of the stakeholders, UL has initiated ANSI Standard development of a measurement and assessment protocol for emissions of 3D printers. Continued research to measure the toxicity of 3D printer emissions and scientific publications of the results are in process.
