Furniture Flammability and Human Health
In collaboration with Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health and UL's Firefighter Safety Research Group (FSRI), UL Chemical Safety Research is evaluating flammability characteristics and chemical exposure processes for upholstered chairs with different construction techniques: With traditional flame retardants; Without any flame retardants; With green chemistry and less hazardous flame retardants; With non-chemical fire barriers. Laboratory studies have been completed on human exposure routes and burn characteristics, and data is being analyzed. A Summit to release the results for stakeholders is scheduled to take place at Emory University in December 2017. Discussion will advance steps for managing this important and multi-faceted human safety concern.
